Long Bio:

Alex Harrow is a genderqueer, pansexual, and demisexual author of queer science fiction and fantasy. Alex’ pronouns are they/them.

When not writing diversity with a chance of explosions, Alex is a high school English teacher, waging epic battles against comma splices, misused apostrophes, and anyone under the delusion that the singular ‘they’ is grammatically incorrect.

A German immigrant, Alex has always been drawn to language and stories. As a result, Alex’ first piece of writing may have been terrible Buffy The Vampire Slayer fanfic written on an electric typewriter. This may also have led to thirteen-year-old Alex’ stubbornly reading the fourth Harry Potter in English instead of waiting for the German translation. An occasional lack of distinction between words that only exist in Harry Potter and words that exist in actual English clearly was the hilarious byproduct of said stubbornness.

Alex still vividly remembers reading their first novel with LGBTQ+ protagonists in their early twenties. They began to write when they realized that the best guarantee to see more books with queer characters was to create them. Alex cares deeply about social justice and wants to see diverse characters, including LGBTQ+ protagonists, in more than the stereotypical coming out story with inevitably tragic endings.

Alex currently lives in Utah with their equally geeky wife, outnumbered by three adorable feline overlords, and what could not possibly be too many books.

Their science fiction debut, EMPIRE OF LIGHT, pitched as a Gay Firefly with magic, about an assassin who will set the world on fire to save the guy he loves, releases on February 4, 2019.

5 Facts about Alex:
  1. I speak seven languages more or less fluently: English, German (yes, at this point my German is actually worse than my English as my mother likes to remind me), Latin, French, Spanish, Italian (hello, Romance languages!), and Ancient Greek (because dead languages FTW!)
  2. As a child, I may or may not have been notorious for stealing other people’s animals, including our neighbor’s horse (my kindergarten teacher was not pleased), the same neighbor’s rabbit (who would have been turned into a roast if not for this daring rescue mission), and various specimen of crawlies that apparently aren’t supposed to be pets?
  3. My career as a professional swearer started early when four-year-old me called my kindergarten teachers some rather choice words after they (rightfully) caught me lying. I have since evolved both my swearing vocabulary and my lying.
  4. When I was ten years old, two existential crises kept me awake at night: One, we are all going to die. Two, the universe is ever-expanding and we will never be able to travel all of it. According to my mother, this explains a lot about me.
  5. My accent both gets me hilarious guesses about my country of origin and has my childhood neighbors convinced that I can’t possibly be from the same country as they are. Clearly, this makes me a chameleon. I shall shamelessly exploit this superpower.

Short Blurb:

Damian is the Empire’s go-to gun. Until a suave revolutionary in need of an assassin kicks his ass and demands his help.

To survive and protect his lover, Damian has to make this revolution work. Even if it means taking on the entire Empire and getting way too close to the man who blackmailed Damian into this in the first place. To save the guy he loves, he’ll set the world on fire.

Blurb:

Holed up aboard a wrecked spaceship in a junkyard, Damian Nettoyer is the Empire’s go-to gun. He kills whoever they want him to kill. In exchange, he and his rag-tag gang of crooks get to live, and Damian’s psychokinetic partner and lover, Aris, isn’t issued a one-way ticket to an Empire-sanctioned lobotomy.

Then his latest mark, Raeyn, a suave revolutionary in need of an assassin, kicks Damian’s ass and demands his help. The first item on the new agenda: take out Damian’s old boss—or Raeyn will take out Damian’s crew.

But the Empire’s on to Damian and Aris is slipping away, his control over his powers crumbling. Worse, the Empire targets Aris to twist him into their weapon.

Damian’s only chance is to team up with Raeyn. If he wants to survive and protect his friends, Damian has to make this revolution work. Even if it means going up against the entire Empire and getting way too close to Raeyn, who blackmailed Damian into this in the first place.
